Presents and Commuting
Dear Spot,
Any suggestions for cool gift items a bike geek would be psyched to get for Christmas?
Also, would you tell me about your commuter set up sometime? I caught a glimpse of your commuter bike one day out at Dawson and it looked pretty rad. You seem to know what's cool for school too!
Thanks,
DT
Dear Diana,
I have an answer for both of your questions. For the presents, I would suggest some cold weather clothes. You could try tights, a skull cap, booties, even toe spikes for mud/snow. Also, some warmer gloves, which I think anyone would appreciate. Maybe someone would like some new or different colored hoods or a light for training after dark. There is also the idea of rollers/trainers for indoor training. There are also books, like Bobke II by Bob Roll, Cyclocross by Simon Burney, and A Dog in a Hat by Joe Parkin.
As for the commuter, I got a frame and fork off of Bike Nashbar, got some brakes, and built it up from there with parts from our garage. The rack was for putting a bag on and carrying my saxophone to school. The highlights are Avid Single Digit 7 brakes, FSA bars and a Syncros stem.
DA-7400
Welcome to SpotOn! Spot is my nickname, and Nolan is my real name. This is my column for equipment advice, junior racing and any question you have that is cycling related. You can send me questions through the link on this page.
My first subject will be Shimano Dura-ace 7400 shifters. These are advantageous for a young padawan (me) because their shorter inner lever allows kids with small hands to reach the levers without going into their drops. Sadly, they started making them twenty years ago and haven’t made them for 10 or more years. Mine are still going strong after a lot of use. They’re older than me, which isn’t very common. They are often available on Craigslist or EBay and adults you know may have a set (or full group) that they don’t want anymore. They are compatible only with DA 7400 8-speed rear derailleurs. They were the first shifters mounted on the handlebars that were mass produced.
